NAACP

It was founded in 1909 by a group of interracial activists in response to the violence against African American citizens that was prominent at the time.

In its early decades, the main agenda of the NAACP was the anti-lynching campaign. The civil rights group also won some major legal victories during the civil rights era in the 1950s and ’60s.

Today, the NAACP has over half a million members across the globe and more than 2200 branches.

The Founders

The NAACP was founded in February 1909 in the city of New York. Its establishment came partially in response to the Springfield race riot that took place in Illinois in 1908.

In that event, two African American men held in a jail in Springfield for alleged crimes against white people were transferred to a jail in another city secretively.

This act prompted a white mob to murder two African Americans, burn down over 40 homes in the town’s black residential district and ransack some local businesses.

NAACP Today

Today the scope of the NAACP is more robust. They tackle civil rights violations, inequality in health care, education, jobs, protecting voting rights, and the criminal justice system.

The group also pushes for the removal of statues and confederate flags from public property.

One of their key objectives is to eliminate racial prejudice among citizens of the United States and achieve equality of rights.

They also aim to remove the barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes.

The NAACP also strives to inform the public about the adverse effects of racial profiling and discrimination and seek its elimination.

The organization also focuses on educating minority groups on their constitutional rights, such as their rights in the criminal justice system and voting rights.
